Re Fiascone

The cultivation

The King Umberto tomato, locally know as Fiascone, is cultivated in the uncontaminated soils of the Amalfi Coast.

In the mountainous area of the community of Tramonti ‘’the guardians’’ of this vegetable gave a new life to a rural biodiversity that have almost become extinct.

The seeds produced at the headquarters of AcarbioThanks to the Acarbio association‘s crowdfunding project and the technical support of Crea–Ort Pontecagnano, with their agronomist Rosa Pepe following up various stages of the tomato cultivation, it was possible to start up a first small production in 2015 and that now is becoming more relevant year by year.

E crescono le piantine del pomodoro Re Umberto

The growth of the King Umberto tomato seedlingsUsing the traditional local cultivation techniques Acarbio has prepared the seedbeds at the ground located at the Acarbio office (Grisignano St., Tramonti). planting the seeds carefully preserved by the local farmers (who would also prepare their own seedbeds). Once ready, the seedlings are transferred in the carefully prepared soil.

The chosen areas of cultivation are sunny, with a lot of light and fresh air. To keep the soil clear of the weeds the land is being mulched with organic materials and in order to maintain the right humidity the seedlings are being watered only when necessary.

To follow the specific regulations and the guidelines of the agronomists from Crea – Ort Pontecagnano only biological manures and organic fertilisers are used.
